Was bedeuten Textvarianten?

Faith and history · The transmission of the Bible
Centuries of copying, translation, and reading stand between the biblical authors and the book we hold today. What witnesses do we have? What do textual variants mean? And why does the Church receive precisely these books as the word of God?
Explore the surviving objects. Follow their documented journeys, examine their images and read the sources in context.
For Catholics, the Bible is inspired Holy Scripture: God speaks through real human authors. This is precisely why its language, history, and transmission deserve close attention. A surviving object can attest the wording of a verse; that a book is inspired is recognised within the faith of the Church. These are distinct but connected questions.
Let us begin with what is tangible: the manuscripts. An autograph is the original manuscript. No New Testament autograph survives. What survives consists of copies, early translations, and quotations. Comparing them allows us to trace the transmission of the text.
The Great Isaiah Scroll from Qumran is about two thousand years old and contains the Book of Isaiah. It makes a long process of transmission directly open to examination: many expressions agree with the later Hebrew text; alongside them are spellings and substantive readings that require comparison. The scroll attests neither a merely medieval invention nor the letter-for-letter identity of every copy.
The Masoretic tradition preserved the Hebrew text and added carefully prepared reading signs and annotations. The Septuagint is the Greek translation tradition of the Old Testament that developed over an extended period. The Samaritan Pentateuch provides another branch of transmission for the five books of Moses. Discoveries at Qumran show that different textual forms already existed side by side before Christ.
These witnesses help to explain difficult passages. At the same time, they must be distinguished from the question of the canon: a collection in a cave or a codex initially tells us what was kept there or bound together; it is not yet an authoritative list issued by the Church.

Papyrus P52 contains a few lines from the questioning of Jesus before Pilate in John 18. Its dating rests on comparison with ancient handwriting. Alongside the early assignment to the first half of the 2nd century, the Rylands catalogue also discusses more recent proposals placing it closer to AD 200. A precise year such as “125” is therefore not an established date.
P46 takes us further: here we have an early codex containing Pauline letters. The leaf with 1 Corinthians 15 transmits the account of Christ’s death, burial, Resurrection, and appearances. P75 preserves substantial portions of Luke and John. The great 4th-century codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus allow long stretches of text to be compared.
There are also Latin, Syriac, and Coptic translations, together with quotations by Christian authors. Numerous witnesses make differences visible and open to examination. Their sheer number, however, replaces neither an investigation of their relationships nor the historical examination of particular accounts.

A scribe may omit a word, confuse a similar-sounding form, or skip too far when two lines have the same ending. A marginal note may later enter the text. Other differences concern word order or stylistic smoothing. Scholars call such differences textual variants.
To examine them, one asks: which independent witnesses support the reading? How old and how widespread is it? What process of copying best explains the other form? And does it fit the author’s language and context? No single rule of thumb decides automatically; even an ancient manuscript may contain an error.
In 1943, Pius XII expressly encouraged work on the original languages and textual criticism. The ecclesiastical authority of the Latin Vulgate does not mean that, in every individual case, its manuscripts are critically superior to the Greek or Hebrew witnesses. Careful comparison serves the understanding of the word that has been received.
Different lines of transmission make comparison possible. A later copy can preserve an ancient text; the age of the physical material alone therefore does not settle every reading.
In Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, Mark ends at 16:8. Other manuscripts transmit the longer ending. Yet already in the 2nd century, Irenaeus quotes Mark 16:19 as a statement of the Gospel. The passage is therefore no medieval invention. Its early attestation and reception by the Church must be acknowledged, while its place in the original composition is examined as a distinct question. Irenaeus, III,10,5.
The account is absent from important early Greek witnesses and appears in different places in other manuscripts. The Church has received it within Scripture. Textual history and reception by the Church must therefore be explained together; the evidence cannot be replaced either by silence or by a sweeping judgement about all the Gospels.
The explicit formulation about the three heavenly witnesses has a different, substantially weaker basis in the Greek manuscript tradition than in the later Latin tradition. Catholic teaching on the Trinity does not depend on this single reading: the baptismal command in Matthew 28:19 and the whole apostolic testimony of faith also belong to its scriptural foundation.
The confession of the Ethiopian eunuch is absent from numerous early textual witnesses. Yet Irenaeus already knows his confession of Jesus Christ as the Son of God in the 2nd century. This establishes the antiquity of the tradition without, by itself, deciding its place in every line of manuscript transmission. Irenaeus, III,12,8.
These examples show that significant variants can be identified and are openly accessible. A difficult passage does not imply that the entire text can be changed at will.
In the early Church, the Gospels appear as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Papias, whose statements are preserved by Eusebius, connects Mark with the preaching of Peter. In the 2nd century, Irenaeus names the four Evangelists and relates them to apostolic preaching. These testimonies are historical sources; their proximity, context, and transmission must be examined.
The Gospels themselves also provide indications: Luke explains in his prologue that he has carefully investigated earlier accounts and the tradition of the eyewitnesses. John 21:24 refers to the disciple’s testimony. Historical work asks how this testimony took written form.
The Evangelists select, arrange, and emphasise. This is compatible with reliable reporting: two witnesses can describe the same event from different perspectives. Agreements and differences must be examined in the particular text. Nor may a prophecy be dated after the event merely because prophecy is ruled out in advance.
These three Gospels are called the Synoptics because many of their passages can be viewed side by side. Similar wording, a similar sequence, and shared material suggest relationships within their transmission. Oral preaching, common sources, and one author’s use of another Gospel are possible explanations.
These are explanatory models. “Q” is not a papyrus that has been discovered. The use of sources does not make an account untrue; what remains decisive is the tradition supporting a statement and how a model explains the actual agreements and differences.
Alongside points of contact with the Synoptics, John offers his own selection of signs, conversations, and visits for the feasts. His theological depth does not cancel his claim to report real deeds and words of Jesus. The Gospel itself expressly connects signs, testimony, and faith.
The Pauline letters show the apostolic testimony of faith already present in early communities. In 1 Corinthians 15:3–8, Paul passes on what he himself received and names witnesses to the Resurrection. In Galatians 1:18–19, he reports his meeting with Cephas and James. The proclamation thus appears within a network of persons and communities that can be examined.
The Acts of the Apostles describes the spread of this proclamation. Places, offices, and travel routes provide historical points of reference. The ancient presentation of speeches may involve selection and summary; this does not, in itself, establish that they were invented. Detailed historical work and reading the full context belong together.
The Lachish relief from Sennacherib’s palace depicts the Assyrian attack on the Judean city. It takes us into the world of 2 Kings 18–19 and Isaiah 36–37. The Pilate inscription attests the Roman official and his title as prefect of Judaea. Such discoveries anchor the biblical accounts in concrete history.
Tacitus reports on Christ, His execution under Pontius Pilate, and the persecution of Christians under Nero. Pliny describes Christian worship in his correspondence with Trajan. Josephus mentions James as the brother of Jesus, who is called Christ. The longer passage about Jesus in Josephus is disputed with regard to later alterations and must not be treated without distinction as an entirely untouched external testimony.
These witnesses confirm particular persons, historical settings, and the early existence of Christian communities. They do not prove every individual event, nor do they establish the inspiration of Scripture on their own. Their strength lies in their specific, limited evidence, which joins that of other witnesses.
The canon is the authoritative list of the sacred books: 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. The Church received these writings within apostolic Tradition, read them in the liturgy, and distinguished them from competing collections. A book does not become inspired only through a later decision; the Church recognises its place within the Scripture she has received.
The development did not take place everywhere at the same time. In his Festal Letter of 367, Athanasius names exactly the 27 books of the New Testament; his classification of the Old Testament, however, cannot simply be equated with the complete Catholic list later formulated authoritatively. In De doctrina christiana, Augustine describes their reception by the Church and lists the biblical books.
The Council of Trent in 1546 authoritatively reaffirmed the Catholic list. It did not create the Bible for the first time. Nor does the widespread story that the Council of Nicaea selected the books of the New Testament in 325 have any corresponding foundation in its surviving decrees.
As regards the Old Testament, the history of Jewish collections must not be reduced to a single, universally binding “decision on the canon at Jamnia”. Christian reception, Jewish textual transmission, and later differences between confessions must each be explained in their own context.

Divino afflante Spiritu encourages the study of the original languages, textual transmission, and literary forms.
Open source in the readerThe First Vatican Council teaches that the biblical books were written under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost and have God as their author. Inspiration does not mean setting aside the human author: language, education, memory, and literary form serve the meaning intended by God.
Leo XIII rejects the restriction of inspiration to merely religious or moral portions of Scripture. At the same time, one must understand what the author actually asserts. A parable is true as a parable; figurative language does not claim to be a record of scientific measurements. Taking genre and intended meaning seriously is different from arbitrarily reinterpreting an inconvenient statement.
Copyists and translators are not thereby free from error in every detail merely because they transmit an inspired text. Augustine already distinguishes the authority of canonical Scripture from a possibly faulty copy, a difficulty in translation, or his own lack of understanding. Pius XII joins this ecclesiastical attitude to careful linguistic and historical research.
Dei Filius, Chapter 2 · Providentissimus Deus · Augustine to Jerome
The loss of the original manuscript does not make later witnesses worthless. Independent copies, translations, and early quotations can be checked against one another. Where a decision remains difficult, the specific uncertainty can be identified instead of declaring the entire work unknown.
Early manuscripts and quotations from the Fathers long predate the later decisions of councils. The Church’s lists attest the reception and delimitation of writings already being read. Transmission, recognition, and authoritative definition are distinct steps.
The Catholic faith professes God’s action in real history. It does not require disdain for manuscripts, languages, or facts. Historical research examines the accessible evidence; faith receives Scripture as God’s word and reads it within the apostolic Tradition of the Church.
Holy Scripture is no collection invented at a late date without a tangible earlier history. Early manuscripts, translations, Church Fathers, and sources outside the Bible disclose a long path of transmission that can be examined in concrete terms. Textual variants thereby become visible and can be judged on their merits. The Church preserves Scripture, professes its inspiration, and interprets it within the faith she has received.

Questi testimoni aiutano a spiegare i passi difficili.

Ireneo, III,10,5.
Lachis · Pilato · Tacito · Plinio · Giuseppe Flavio

Dei Filius, capítulo 2 · Providentissimus Deus · Agustín a Jerónimo
No exige menospreciar manuscritos, lenguas o hechos.

Quos testes habemus? Quid significant lectiones variae?
Pentateuchus Samaritanus alium ramum traditionis quinque librorum Moysi praebet. Reperta Qumranensia ostendunt iam ante Christum diversas textus formas simul exstitisse.
Hi testes locos difficiles explicare adiuvant.
P46 ulterius nos ducit: hic antiquus codex epistulas Pauli continens adest.

Librarius verbum omittere, formam similiter sonantem confundere vel, duobus similibus linearum finibus occurrentibus, longius transilire potest. Adnotatio marginalis postea in textum intrare potest. Aliae differentiae ordinem verborum vel sermonis expolitionem spectant. Scientia has differentias lectiones varias appellat.
Diversae viae traditionis comparationem permittunt. Exemplar recentius textum antiquum servare potest; sola igitur aetas materiae non omnem lectionem diiudicat.
In Vaticano et Sinaitico Marcus ad 16,8 terminatur. Alia manuscripta conclusionem longiorem tradunt. Simul Irenaeus iam saeculo II Marcum 16,19 tamquam Evangelii verbum citat. Irenaeus, III,10,5.
Narratio in praecipuis testibus Graecis antiquis deest et in aliis manuscriptis diversis locis apparet. Ecclesia eam in Scriptura recepit.
Confessio eunuchi Aethiopis in multis antiquis testibus textus deest. Irenaeus tamen iam saeculo II eius confessionem Iesu Christi Filii Dei novit. Hoc antiquitatem huius traditionis probat, quin eo solo eius locus in singulis ramis traditionis manuscriptae definiatur. Irenaeus, III,12,8.
Haec tria Evangelia Synoptica dicuntur, quia multi eorum loci iuxta se considerari possunt.
Epistulae Pauli testimonium fidei apostolicae iam in primis communitatibus ostendunt.
Actus Apostolorum propagationem huius praedicationis narrant.
Inscriptio Pilati magistratum Romanum eiusque titulum praefecti Iudaeae testatur. Talia reperta narrationes biblicas in certa historia collocant.
Ecclesia has Scripturas in traditione apostolica accepit, in liturgia legit et a collectionibus aemulis distinxit.
Concilium Tridentinum anno 1546 indicem catholicum auctoritative confirmavit.
