Dialogue without restored communion

Mutual anathemas are lifted and dialogue advances, yet ecclesiological and doctrinal division remains.

First-millennium synods, Roman interventions, Eastern patriarchates and later Byzantine theology must be placed in their own contexts. The historical test asks whether later autocephalous arrangements exhaust the apostolic constitution or whether the evidence also reveals a permanent Roman office of confirmation, appeal and universal communion.

The controlling evidence must be arranged by date and genre: contemporaneous inscription or manuscript, later narrative, legal or scholastic synthesis, and modern reinterpretation. The dossier does not let a late commentary silently define an earlier source. Where an internal tradition supplies the date, that claim is distinguished from an independently datable witness.

Chronology protects the inquiry against two opposite errors. One may not dismiss a late source merely because it is late when it preserves earlier material; neither may one treat it as an eyewitness without argument. The preceding period is Lyons and Florence. This is the final period in the landing-page sequence. The exact transitions matter because claims of primordial continuity, apostolic origin or prophetic fulfilment depend upon them.

Natural reason first asks whether the period’s claims are internally coherent and proportionate to their evidence. It then asks whether the account of God or ultimate reality explains contingent being, intelligence, moral obligation and personal identity. Historical priority is not itself a proof of truth, but a later system that contradicts an earlier public witness bears the burden of identifying the corruption and supplying stronger evidence.

The Catholic conclusion distinguishes valid sacraments and Eastern patrimony from the objective evil of schism and from denials of the universal Petrine office.

That conclusion follows only after the prior rational and documentary questions have been stated. It is not inserted as a substitute for the evidence.
