Official restriction of plural marriage

Manifestos reshape the relation between revelation, law and institutional continuity.

What belongs to this period

Manifestos reshape the relation between revelation, law and institutional continuity.

Joseph Smith’s successive narratives, scriptures, priesthood claims and doctrinal expansions must be read in date order, followed by succession, Utah development and modern institutional revision. A total-apostasy and restoration claim bears the burden of showing when the visible Church disappeared, why Christ’s promises failed, and how nineteenth-century texts are authenticated independently of the authority they are used to establish.

Historical dossier

Sources and institutions

The controlling evidence must be arranged by date and genre: contemporaneous inscription or manuscript, later narrative, legal or scholastic synthesis, and modern reinterpretation. The dossier does not let a late commentary silently define an earlier source. Where an internal tradition supplies the date, that claim is distinguished from an independently datable witness.

Chronological control

Chronology protects the inquiry against two opposite errors. One may not dismiss a late source merely because it is late when it preserves earlier material; neither may one treat it as an eyewitness without argument. The preceding period is Succession crisis and migration. The following period is Priesthood and temple access. The exact transitions matter because claims of primordial continuity, apostolic origin or prophetic fulfilment depend upon them.

What reason and public history can establish

Natural reason first asks whether the period’s claims are internally coherent and proportionate to their evidence. It then asks whether the account of God or ultimate reality explains contingent being, intelligence, moral obligation and personal identity. Historical priority is not itself a proof of truth, but a later system that contradicts an earlier public witness bears the burden of identifying the corruption and supplying stronger evidence.

The full Catholic judgement

The Catholic conclusion rejects the plurality of gods, total apostasy, new priesthood and new scripture claims, affirming the indefectible apostolic Church and one divine nature.

That conclusion follows only after the prior rational and documentary questions have been stated. It is not inserted as a substitute for the evidence.
