Promise, deliverance and covenantal law

The narratives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Exodus establish divine initiative before the law. Sinai orders worship, morality and national life within a covenant whose purpose includes holiness and witness among the nations.

Biblical Israel, exile, the Second Temple world, the apostolic controversy and rabbinic consolidation must not be treated as one institutionally unchanged system. The controlling historical question is whether covenant, sacrifice, Davidic promise and prophecy reach their publicly claimed fulfilment in Jesus Christ, or whether the messianic centre can be indefinitely postponed after Temple and sacrifice have ceased.

The controlling evidence must be arranged by date and genre: contemporaneous inscription or manuscript, later narrative, legal or scholastic synthesis, and modern reinterpretation. The dossier does not let a late commentary silently define an earlier source. Where an internal tradition supplies the date, that claim is distinguished from an independently datable witness.

Chronology protects the inquiry against two opposite errors. One may not dismiss a late source merely because it is late when it preserves earlier material; neither may one treat it as an eyewitness without argument. This is the first period in the landing-page sequence. The following period is David, Temple, prophetic judgement and hope. The exact transitions matter because claims of primordial continuity, apostolic origin or prophetic fulfilment depend upon them.

Natural reason first asks whether the period’s claims are internally coherent and proportionate to their evidence. It then asks whether the account of God or ultimate reality explains contingent being, intelligence, moral obligation and personal identity. Historical priority is not itself a proof of truth, but a later system that contradicts an earlier public witness bears the burden of identifying the corruption and supplying stronger evidence.

The Catholic conclusion receives Israel’s inspired Scriptures and confesses their fulfilment in the Messiah Jesus, His sacrifice and the New Covenant extended to all nations.

That conclusion follows only after the prior rational and documentary questions have been stated. It is not inserted as a substitute for the evidence.
