What belongs to this period
Colonial encounter, printing, nationalism and global meditation movements reshape Buddhist self-presentation. Practices are often detached from karma, rebirth, monastic authority and liberation doctrine.
The historical Buddha, early monastic communities, Abhidharma schools, Mahāyāna sūtras and tantric systems must be dated separately. The philosophical test asks whether no-self, dependent origination and nirvāṇa can account for the same agent who acts, suffers, remembers and receives karmic consequence, and whether liberation is positive beatitude or chiefly cessation.

Sources and institutions
The controlling evidence must be arranged by date and genre: contemporaneous inscription or manuscript, later narrative, legal or scholastic synthesis, and modern reinterpretation. The dossier does not let a late commentary silently define an earlier source. Where an internal tradition supplies the date, that claim is distinguished from an independently datable witness.

Chronological control
Chronology protects the inquiry against two opposite errors. One may not dismiss a late source merely because it is late when it preserves earlier material; neither may one treat it as an eyewitness without argument. The preceding period is Tantric and Vajrayāna systems. This is the final period in the landing-page sequence. The exact transitions matter because claims of primordial continuity, apostolic origin or prophetic fulfilment depend upon them.

What reason and public history can establish
Natural reason first asks whether the period’s claims are internally coherent and proportionate to their evidence. It then asks whether the account of God or ultimate reality explains contingent being, intelligence, moral obligation and personal identity. Historical priority is not itself a proof of truth, but a later system that contradicts an earlier public witness bears the burden of identifying the corruption and supplying stronger evidence.

The full Catholic judgement
The Catholic conclusion affirms a permanent created person, sin as moral disorder, grace as healing gift, bodily resurrection and positive beatitude in God, not extinction of personal subjecthood.
That conclusion follows only after the prior rational and documentary questions have been stated. It is not inserted as a substitute for the evidence.
