The five ways do not simply argue that every past event must have an earlier event until one reaches a first date.
An essentially ordered series is different. The pen writes only because the hand moves it; the hand acts through living powers; an instrument has causal efficacy here and now only insofar as it is employed by a principal cause. Remove the principal causal source and the subordinate instruments do nothing in that order. Their power is derivative, not merely inherited at an earlier time.
The distinction is also metaphysical, not confined to mechanical contact. A lamp illuminates because electrical, chemical and structural powers are actual; those powers depend upon the actual being and natures of the components; created natures do not contain the sufficient reason for their own act of being. The deeper the analysis moves, the more it concerns simultaneous dependence rather than temporal succession.
An infinite regress of purely instrumental causes does not explain actual causation. Adding endlessly many paintbrushes without a painter does not paint; adding mirrors without a source of light does not illuminate. The point is not that the human imagination cannot traverse infinity. It is that derivative causal power remains derivative at every level. A first cause in an essentially ordered series is first by explanatory and ontological priority, even if the temporal history of the universe were beginningless.

A father causes a son to exist, but the grown son generates a child through powers he now possesses independently of his deceased father. This is an accidentally ordered series with respect to generation. By contrast, a hand moves a stick that moves a stone. The stick has no independent power to produce this motion in the relevant order; its causal efficacy is instrumental and simultaneous with the principal cause.
The distinction prevents a common misunderstanding of Aquinas. The argument is not “the past cannot be infinite, therefore there was a first event.” Aquinas considered a temporally beginningless created world philosophically possible, although revelation teaches a beginning. The proofs ask whether derivative actuality can exist without a non-derivative actualizer even at one moment.
An infinite number of instruments does not generate principal power. Adding brush after brush does not paint without an artist; an infinite chain of gears does not turn without a source of motion. The image must not be pressed as though God were another physical link. Its point is structural: each intermediate acts only through actuality received in the relevant order.
The order of esse is the deepest essential series. Created causes can transform and communicate forms, but no creature possesses the act of existence by essence. Each substance exists through received esse and can act only while conserved. The first cause is therefore not merely the earliest member but the non-instrumental source of actuality present to every effect.

Removing the principal actuality removes the derivative operation, even if the instruments remain as objects.

A causal level can be ontologically prior even when physical transmission takes time. Nor does every complex network reduce to one linear chain; networks still contain derivative powers requiring a non-derivative source in the relevant order.
Infinite regress fails in an essential series not because infinity is a large number but because adding instruments never supplies principal power. An infinity of paintbrushes with no painter does not paint. Each member passes on what it possesses only derivatively; the explanatory deficit is qualitative, not numerical.

Objection. Modern systems are circular, distributed and mutually dependent rather than linear.
Reply. A distributed network can explain local coordination while every node remains derivative in existence and power. Feedback presupposes actual elements with capacities; it does not cause the network's being or turn mutual dependence into self-subsistence.
