Historical place profile
Dagana
An ancient city of southern Sri Lanka. It was characterized by Ptolemy as "sacred to Selene", a description repeated in the Arabic geographic tradition. Its precise location is uncertain: BAtlDir echoes earlier suggestions (see RE) that tentatively identify it with Tangalla, but RE would prefer as "more likely" an identification with the temple complex and associated settlement at Tenavaram (modern Tongra), an identification also suggested by earlier scholars.
