Biographical dossier
Mary, Mother of Jesus
Mary of Nazareth belongs to the Gospel history of the Incarnation and to the earliest life of the Church. Her profile must distinguish the scriptural events, the Church’s doctrinal judgements and later local traditions.
Chronology and historical sequence
The New Testament does not provide a modern biographical chronology. The Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Cana, Calvary and the prayer of the disciples before Pentecost give the principal narrative sequence.
Primary witnesses
- Luke 1–2 supplies the Annunciation, Visitation, Magnificat, Nativity and Presentation.
- John 2 and 19 place Mary at Cana and at the Cross.
- Acts 1:14 places her in prayer with the apostolic community before Pentecost.
Office, vocation and historical agency
Catholic doctrine confesses Mary as Mother of God because the one born of her is the divine Person of the Son. Her privileges are understood in relation to Christ, not as an independent parallel to him.
Geographic itinerary
Nazareth, the hill country of Judah, Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Cana are the chief scriptural anchors. Later shrines and devotional locations require their own source classification.
