# Katholon Patristic Apologetics Corpus

**Version:** 1.0.0
**Release:** 2026-07-24
**Language of the source texts:** English

## Purpose

This package combines three different kinds of material that must not be confused:

1. **James Cardinal Gibbons, _The Faith of Our Fathers_** - a readable, systematic Catholic apologetic. Gibbons explains and defends disputed Catholic doctrines, beginning with Scripture and repeatedly adducing the early Fathers.
2. **Berington, Kirk and Waterworth, _The Faith of Catholics_ (3 volumes)** - a much denser patristic evidence dossier. Each doctrine is formulated propositionally, supported from Scripture, and then documented through witnesses from the first five centuries. This is the closest public-domain functional substitute in this package for a modern testimonia collection such as Jurgens.
3. **George Hodges, _The Early Church: From Ignatius to Augustine_** - a continuous historical narrative from an Episcopal/Anglican author. It is useful for chronology and orientation, but it is neither a Catholic apologetic nor a primary-source corpus.

## What this package is not

It does **not** contain William A. Jurgens' modern three-volume _The Faith of the Early Fathers_. Jurgens' selection, English translations, notes, numbering and indexes remain a modern copyrighted editorial work. The public-domain works here may be used as a lawful corpus foundation, but they must not be represented as Jurgens or as a verbatim replacement for his edition.

## Recommended use in Katholon

- Present **Gibbons** as the explanatory apologetic layer.
- Present **The Faith of Catholics** as the expandable source-evidence layer under each doctrine.
- Link every patristic quotation, wherever possible, to the complete underlying work in the Church Fathers corpus and to the original Greek or Latin edition.
- Keep **Hodges** in a separately labelled secondary-history collection.

## Text formats

- `*.pdf`: facsimile or born-digital source edition.
- `*.txt`: text extracted from the PDF. Gibbons is clean Project Gutenberg text; the nineteenth-century scans contain OCR errors.
- `*_NORMALIZED.txt`: conservative UTF-8 normalization for import. Page breaks are represented as `[[PAGE_BREAK]]`; words have not been silently modernized or aggressively dehyphenated.
- `chapters/`: Gibbons divided into 31 import-ready chapter files.

## Reliability warning

The OCR text is for searching, indexing and initial import. Exact quotations, punctuation, page references, Greek and Latin words must be checked against the PDF page image before publication. The historical works also reflect the scholarship and polemical context of their periods.
